Asymptotic Behavior of a Model of Characteristic Earthquakes and its Implications for Regional Seismicity

چکیده
The recently introduced Minimalist Model [VázquezPrada et al, 2002] of characteristic earthquakes provides a simple representation of the seismicity originated in a single fault. Here, we first characterize the properties of this model for large systems. Then, assuming, as it has been observed, that the size of the faults in a big enough region is fractally distributed, with a fractal dimension D = 1.7, we describe the total seismicity produced in that region. The resulting catalogue accounts for the addition of all the characteristic events triggered in the faults and also includes the rest of non-characteristic earthquakes. The global accumulated size-frequency relation correctly describes a Gutenberg-Richter form, with a b exponent of around 0.7.

Insights into the Aftershocks and Inter-Seismicity for Some Large Persian Earthquakes
This paper focuses on aftershocks behavior and seismicity along some co-seismic faults for large earthquakes in Iran. The data of aftershocks and seismicity roughly extracted from both the Institute of Geophysics the University of Tehran (IGUT) and International Seismological Center (ISC) catalogs. Apply some essential methods on 43 large earthquakes data; like the depth, magnitude as well as t...
متن کاملSeismicity of Batubesi Dam at Sorowako Region Based on Earthquake Data and Microtremor Measurement
Batubesi Dam which is located in Sorowako region in the middle part of Sulawesi island had been designed with seismic coefficient about 0.20g. The region constitutes an active earthquake zone with the recurrence frequency and magnitude of the earthquake are relatively high. The region is located on and active fault zone due to lateral fault movement (strike-slip) of Matano fault, Palukoro fault...
متن کاملApplication of the rule extraction method to evaluate seismicity of Iran
Assessing seismic hazards involves specifying the likelihood, magnitude and location of earthquakes in a region. Predicting the seismic hazards is the first step in reducing the impact of the damage caused by an earthquake. In this study, to fully utilize all the known parameters which may possibly affect the occurrence of earthquakes (mb ≥ 4.5); a data-driven rule-extraction method called the...
متن کاملRecurrent seismicity in Rajasthan State in the tectonically stable NW Indian Craton
Indian peninsular region comprises several Archean cratonic blocks (Dharwar, Bastar, Singhbhum, Aravalli – Bundelkhand), bordered by Proterozoic mobile belts. Therefore, this region is considered as tectonically stable and designated as the least vulnerable region to earthquake hazard except the still active Central Indian Tectonic Zone (CITZ). The latter is a major suture between southern and ...
متن کاملThe Sacred Mountain of Varallo in Italy: Seismic Risk Assessment by Acoustic Emission and Structural Numerical Models
We examine an application of Acoustic Emission (AE) technique for a probabilistic analysis in time and space of earthquakes, in order to preserve the valuable Italian Renaissance Architectural Complex named "The Sacred Mountain of Varallo." Among the forty-five chapels of the Renaissance Complex, the structure of the Chapel XVII is of particular concern due to its uncertain structural condition...
